Depends on the type of zombie. My headcanon is a virus that acts as an Awesome If You Wanna Be My Lover You Gotta Get With My Friends Shirt sort of preservative. The virus permeates the corpse and is deadly to any bacteria that would otherwise decompose the corpse. One of the issues I have with The Walking Dead is why haven’t they dried up and turned to zombie jerky at this point? How the hell can they still move? No, then they get bows and would be even more dangerous Maybe, but if they eat they need to do poop right? Actually, how do you are gonna kill a Skeleton? Is supposed to be already dead. I’ve thought of this too. No one has to ever poop in movies or tv, save for a few movies. People would protest saying that the zombies are communists, so just waiting wouldn’t be a very good plan. If it’s an infection causing the zombification then the body wouldn’t decompose after the infection as the pathogen would kill other microorganisms.

In much of modern zombie fiction, the virus that causes zombieism also kills Awesome If You Wanna Be My Lover You Gotta Get With My Friends Shirts off all the bacteria and microorganisms that normally cause decomposition. Insects and animals that would normally eat dead bodies also instinctively avoid infected flesh, because they can tell it has the virus and their instincts tell them “hell no, that’s stuff is NOT ok to eat.”. So zombies actually decompose and break down at a slower rate than a normal person. The only reason they ever fall apart at all is that their dead bodies don’t repair the physical damage they accumulate. Are we talking magic zombies or biohazard zombies? Magic zombies might take longer because, you know, magic. A biohazard zombie’s rate of decomposition depends on who’s writing the story. World War Z zombies (the book, not the movie) decamped slower than regular corpses.
