I bought the book a while back and have been meaning to read it. I didn’t know there was a movie! the Funny Just A Girl Who Loves Turtle Shirt book is so good. I read it before I knew there was a movie too. It was so full of surprises, twists, and turns! Then I was like “holy shit I can’t believe that was the only chapter I’d add Departures (2008) to this list. Masahiro Motoki won the best actor at the Japan Academy Awards for his role here. The soundtrack is pretty great too. Synopsis according to Google overview:

I like After Life, but my favorite Kore movies are Still Walking about how a family reacts to lose and Nobody Knows about a group of children who are abandoned and learn to live on their own.

I also love The Taste of Tea but you should know that it is both slow and super quirky. I would also add another 4-hour movie to the list: Happy Hour by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi. It’s a Funny Just A Girl Who Loves Turtle Shirt slice of life of four women in their thirties who are friends. Absolutely beautiful. Nobody knows is amazing.. one of my all-time favorite movies, but maybe not as good for language learning as some of his other movies. If you live in the US, the public library system is a good resource. Major city libraries often have agreements with streaming services.
